I LOVED this meet! The timing of the meet was perfect, and the size and competitiveness was an absolute fit for us. This meet presented an opportunity for all of our swimmers to shine. Nearly all of the 13 and over swimmers experienced their first swim in a final. Not only were they faced with morning vs afternoon swims but also finals. These swimmers racked up tons of personal bests in the morning and improved on their times in the finals. The finals provided an opportunity to dig deep mentally and physically and to practice some of the strategies we discuss about being confident, positive, tenacious and tested our mantra “what you do at practice shows up at a meet”.
The 12 and under swimmers also racked up tons of personal bests, top five finishes (8) and Neve Drinic crushed a very old team record in the 200BR! Kyla R, Neve D, and Fabian T will receive medals for their performances in the top three. The 12 and under swimmers implemented many of the details we have been discussing and working on in practices. For example, we have been really working on speeding up to the walls prior to turning and trying not to breath and say “hello” to the wall prior to the turn. This improvement was really noticeable especially if I compare to the Alex Baumann meet. We have also been working on a tight streamline and fast underwater kicks after entry into the water. Also, a noticeable improvement. Visualization, was in full force over the weekend too. In particular, we have been practicing this skill on Saturdays. I feel that the biggest improvement was when I asked swimmers if they had a game plan prior to their swim, most were able to articulate a well thought out plan confidently and after their swim they were keen to debrief and self-evaluate. This is a big step in the development of youth both in and out of the pool! It is a life skill that we will continue to develop through swimming.
Based on this meet, some swimmers may qualify for either the Central Region B or C meets which take place in February. As soon as the meet packages become available (complete with qualifying times) they will be posted on the calendar on our website. As we approach our holiday break I will be speaking to the swimmers about the importance of doing something active for at least an hour and a half every day to retain the fitness and strength we have developed thus far. I feel this should be something away from the pool and something that swimmers enjoy doing!
